Conserving Water
Water in the Bellingen Shire is extracted from the Bielsdown and Bellinger River and then treated to drinking level standard. It takes a lot of energy and resources to do this, so water conservation is a key priority for Council.
A number of Council sites have rainwater tanks installed, including the Council Administration building where the water is used for flushing the toilets. Other measures Council has taken to reduce water consumption include:
- installing flow restrictors on taps
- installing water efficient showerheads
- monitoring for leaks
- conducting water audits, and
- installing smart meters.
Council is continuing to look for further opportunities to reduce water consumption.
