Abandoned vehicles

A vehicle that is legally parked, registered and not causing an obstruction or danger to the public is not considered an abandoned vehicle.

If you believe that a vehicle has been abandoned or dumped in your neighbourhood, first check if the vehicle is registered.

Note: Registered vehicles are permitted to stay parked in one spot for 28 days providing they are in good order and parked in line with NSW road rules.

When not to report

A vehicle that is legally parked, registered and not causing an obstruction or danger to the public is not considered an abandoned vehicle. 

You do not need to make a report if the vehicle is:

  • legally parked
  • registered (to a nearby address)
  • claimed by the owner
  • not causing an obstruction or danger to the public
  • just moved from interstate

Consider the condition of the car, if it is a good condition this is an indication the car is still being used.

 

When to report

Signs the car is genuinely abandoned:

  • Covered in cobwebs, leaves, twigs
  • missing number plates
  • Broken parts attached or dangling
  • Illegally parked
 
If the abandoned vehicle has number plates

If you suspect the vehicle is abandoned, but it still has number plates, contact the NSW Police (131 444)

Rangers don't have the authority to deal with vehicles that have registration number plates attached. Exceptions are parking matters or emergency situations to ensure public safety.

If the abandoned vehicle does not have number plates

Report the vehicle to Council and we investigate. If we determine a vehicle is abandoned, we will issue a notice of intention to impound, and remove the vehicle.

 

Report it to Council

If you find what you think is an abandoned vehicle, report it and our rangers will investigate.

You will need to provide:

  • exact location
  • make, model and colour
  • number plate (if available).
