Calling all Gumbaynggirr artists!

EXTENSION OF EOI TO 17 JANUARY 2025

Bellingen Shire Council is seeking to commission one or more Gumbaynggirr artists, designers or art collectives to create original artwork to be integrated into town entry statement signage.

The project aims to create designs that reflect the culture and landscape of the local area; enriching the visitor experience and creating a sense of pride in our communities. The artworks will feature localised Gumbaynggirr designs that will be incorporated into the town entry statement signage elements.

Key objectives are to:

  • Enhance acknowledgment of Gumbaynggirr Peoples in the Bellingen Shire
  • Reflect and celebrate Gumbaynggirr art and culture
  • Contribute to a revitalised public realm
  • Assist the development of a strong brand identity for the Bellingen Shire
  • Enhance the impression of the Bellingen Shire as a special place, and reflect the environmental, social and cultural significance of the Shire
  • Encourage connections between people and this place

Town entry signage is proposed for several locations within the Shire, with the artwork design of each sign reflecting the area it is placed in.

All expression of interest responses to be lodged by email to mveenkamp@bellingen.nsw.gov.au before the deadline 11:59pm Friday 17 January 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many signs are there going to be across the Shire?

There will be a total of 8 signs across the Shire:

  • Two signs in Urunga

  • Two signs in Bellingen

  • Two signs in Dorrigo

  • Two signs in Mylestom/ Repton

How are three artworks being used across the 8 signs?

We are seeking three artworks to represent the three distinct areas of the Shire:

  1. Coastal (artwork design to be applied to the Urunga, Mylestom and Repton signs)

  2. Valley (artwork design to be applied to the Bellingen signs)

  3.  Plateau (artwork design to be applied to the Dorrigo signs)

Will the signs all be the same?

The signs may differ in size and shape. The selected artwork(s) will require some manipulation and digital adapting to create visually suitable sign panel artwork.

What is the total amount I/ our artist collective receive for this work?

The following amounts are per artwork (maximum three artworks, as outlined in Q2 above):

  • $1000 excluding GST for the artist fee

  • $7,200 excluding GST for the licensing fee

Can I apply for all three artworks?

We are open to submissions for one, two or all three town entry statement artworks.

Artists may submit an EOI for works for all three regions, however, it may be that not all three are selected. It may be that one, two or three artists or groups of artists may be selected as part of the panel assessment process.

Will I need to enter a license agreement and who retains the copyright for the artwork?

Copyright for artwork developed for the Bellingen Shire town entry statement signage project will be retained by the artist.

A licensing agreement for an exclusive license, in-perpetuity, will be entered into for this artwork commission. The license agreement will clearly set out the agreed uses of the final design.

Artwork selected for inclusion in the Bellingen Shire town entry statement signage project will be utilised for town entry statements, across the Bellingen Shire road network.

What do I need to include in my response to the EOI?

We'd love to hear about you, why you're interested in this work, your artistic capabilities and any previous experience of artwork commissioning. Items to cover in your reply include:
