About the Project

The major landslip caused by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred has severely damaged Johnsens Road, affecting a large section of the road and Surrounding area. A temporary access road has been constructed, allowing residents access around the slip, and are asked to slow down and proceed with caution when travelling through the affected area. Council is working with geotechnical experts and Transport for NSW to assess the damage and determine potential funding through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Timeframe

The landslip damage is complex, and repairs may take an extended period. Council is actively engaging with the Johnsens Road community to understand immediate and long-term needs.

Current Timeframes:

Detailed survey of the slip site, topography and features - 1-2 weeks

Subsurface investigations - 2-4 weeks.

  • Drill boreholes to a depth of 10-15 metres
  • Undertake sampling and testing of road and embankment materials and groundwater levels
  • Install monitoring instrumentation for measurement of movement of slip and groundwater

Develop geotechnical models - 4- 6 weeks

Develop design to work out what repair is needed to support the landslip - 6 weeks to 12 weeks

Re-instate road pavement / or possibly re-align road and re-build road on a new alignment - To be confirmed once design solution is developed

Community Impacts

The road closure affects residents, businesses, and services, disrupting daily travel. Council advises essential travel only. Temporary access has been made available around the slip to allow access in and out for residents.

Community Engagement

Council is actively consulting with the Johnsens community to assess impacts and gather insights to support funding applications for road reinstatement. Residents, businesses, and service providers are encouraged to complete the survey below to share their experiences and help strengthen Council’s case for funding.
