Scrap Together Community Education Campaign
Let’s get our scrap together and cut waste
Did you know that every time you put your scrap food in your green Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bin, you’re helping our environment twice?
First, all those scraps are recycled to produce nutrient-rich compost that makes our farmland more drought and disease resistant, and supports our parks and gardens.
Second, keeping food scraps out of landfill in the first place is important to help improve our atmosphere. When food ends up in landfill (everything in the red bin goes to landfill) it adds elements that speed up the decomposition of the other materials around it, which in turn increases the rate of greenhouse gas emissions.
✅ What goes in your green bin
All food scraps belong in the green bin, including:
- onions;
- garlic;
- citrus peels; and
- meat and bones.
❌ Do not put in your green bin:
- Any type of plastic (even if it is labelled compostable or biodegradable);
- treated or painted timber;
- nappies (including those that say they are compostable or biodegradable);
- pet poo; or
- rocks, soil or branches thicker than your arm
Bellingen Shire Council on behalf of the New South Wales Environmental Protection Authority (NSW EPA) are running a community wide education campaign regarding the importance of the correct use of your Food Organics and Garden Organics Bin (FOGO) Green Lid Bin service.
Over the next four months we will be delivering a range of interesting and educational facts about the benefits of disposing of all food scraps in our Green lid bin.
