Bellingen Shire Council to Host Menopause and Mental Health Seminar
Published on 21 September 2023
Bellingen Shire Council is excited to announce a free educational seminar focused on Menopause and Mental Health. This event aims to provide valuable insights and support for individuals navigating the unique challenges that menopause can pose to mental well-being.
Event Details
Menopause is a natural phase of life that all women go through, typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55. During this time, hormonal fluctuations can lead to a range of physical and emotional symptoms, including mood swings, anxiety, and depression. Understanding the impact of menopause on mental health is crucial for both individuals experiencing it and their loved ones.
This seminar will feature expert speaker and Bellingen local Thea O’Connor who will cover various aspects of menopause and mental health, including:
- Understanding Menopause: A comprehensive overview of the physical and emotional changes associated with menopause.
- Managing Symptoms: Strategies and techniques for coping with mood swings, anxiety, and depression.
- Support and Resources: Information on available support networks and resources within the community.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussions with one another.
Thea O’Connor is a senior workplace wellbeing advisor. She draws on over 25 years’ experience in health promotion including in the fields of nutrition (as a dietitian), body image, sleep science and workplace health.
Thea is leading Australasia in this space and has worked with a diverse range of organisations, helping them normalise conversations about menopause so that menopausal women feel safe to ask for support when they need it.
Thea is also a TEDx speaker and an ambassador for Monash University’s HER Mental Health campaign.
October is mental health month and all across Australia, people are encouraged to hold events and promote good mental health and wellbeing in their communities.
Deputy Mayor, Cr Jo Cook expressed the Council's commitment to supporting the well-being of its residents:
"Menopause is a significant life transition that can impact mental health, and it's essential that individuals going through this phase have access to information and support. We are proud to host this seminar to empower our community and the staff at Bellingen Shire Council with knowledge and resources."
We encourage everyone, regardless of age or gender, to attend this seminar to gain a better understanding of menopause and its effects on mental health. Together, we can foster a more informed and supportive community.
