Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations are set to be installed at William St, Bellingen, and Morgo St, Urunga. The 22 kW dual port chargers will be mounted to existing electricity poles and accessible from the two adjacent car parking spaces providing community members, visitors and workers with an easy and convenient way to charge their vehicles.

The charging stations, which will be powered by 100% renewable energy, are an important initiative to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and local air pollution. Currently, emissions from transport are the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the Bellingen LGA at 47%. Transitioning to electric vehicles, as well as more active forms of transport such as walking and cycling, are key steps our community can take to help combat climate change.

The charging stations, which are set to be installed in July, will be operated by EVX who have successfully installed and operated these types of chargers in other council areas. To ensure equitable access the two adjacent car parking spaces will be dedicated to EV vehicles to be used only while charging. The charging stations and parking restrictions will be trialled for a 2-year period during which time Council will monitor the usage to inform future decisions.

Council would like to thank all those community members who provided feedback during the consultation process for this initiative. For further information on the environmental benefits of EVs see this recent ABC news article.
