People with a disability, carers and service providers are being encouraged to help shape Bellingen Shire Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2022-2025. The DIAP is an extremely important document which explains how Council works to support people with disability so that they can participate in all areas of community life. It focuses on four key areas including:

  • Developing positive community attitudes and behaviours
  • Creating liveable communities
  • Supporting access to meaningful employment
  • Improving access to services through better systems and processes

A number of community forums will be held to discuss what some of the key priority areas are specific to each location.  The dates for these forums are:

  • DORRIGO: Tuesday 18 January – 10:30am-12:30pm Hickory House, 50 Hickory Street, Dorrigo
  • BELLINGEN: Friday 4 February – 10:30am -12:30pm Bellingen Citizens Centre, Bellingen
  • URUNGA: Thursday 10 February – 2:00pm-4:00pm Urunga Library, 30 Bonville Street, Urunga

Community consultation forms a key part of the planning process, including engagement with people who are impacted by limited access or inclusion, including those with physical, intellectual, cognitive and sensory disabilities and those with mental health conditions.

A Disability Reference Group has been brought together which includes representatives from disability services and people with lived experience of disability. The group have started to review the current plan and identify what has been achieved so far and the priorities going forward.

If you are interested in attending one of these forums or would like more information, please contact the Community Wellbeing Planning Officer on 6655-7300.
