Grand Opening of the newly renovated Dorrigo Library
Published on 11 November 2024
Bellingen Shire Council is excited to invite our community to celebrate the official opening of the newly renovated Dorrigo Library on Wednesday, 20 November at 11:30am.
The opening event will feature Mayor Cr Steve Allan and Library officials who will officially unveil the library’s transformation and officially welcome patrons into the new space.
The revamped Dorrigo Library will feature increased floorspace, two new meeting rooms, new computers, a dedicated youth area, and an accessible toilet, along with mobile shelving for greater flexibility.
The redesigned layout and modern furniture will provide ample room for events and workshops, while allowing the library to adjust its spaces as collections and community needs evolve. The collection will be expanded by 2,000 carefully selected items.
Additionally, the upgrades include an accessible pathway, improved signage, comfortable reading areas, study nooks, and a beautiful children’s section, ideal for events like Storytime.
Library staff are busy finalising the transition from the temporary library at Hickory House back to the revitalised space, which is set to be available to the public from Tuesday 12 November.
Mayor Cr Steve Allan shared his excitement about the new space stating: “The Dorrigo Library has always been a key community asset, and with these renovations, it will better meet the diverse needs of our growing population.
“The expanded space and modern facilities will enable more programs and provide a welcoming environment for learning and creativity.
“This project represents Council’s commitment to ensuring that every resident, from young children to seniors, has access to the resources they need to thrive.
“I look forward to officially welcoming everyone to the newly renovated space on the 20th of November.”
This refurbishment journey began in 2017, when the NSW State Library identified that Dorrigo Library did not meet the floor space benchmarks to serve the growing needs of the community. Bellingen Shire Council was subsequently successful in securing two Public Library Infrastructure grants, which funded not only a new extension but a complete internal refurbishment of the old library building.
The Dorrigo Library staff look forward to welcoming the community into the new space, showcasing the many improvements, and extends their thanks for the community's patience and support during the transition.
